In our previous post - ( Part I ), we discussed how search engines have acquired an important place in our life, and how they actually originated.

Keeping the history of search engines as the core topic, we are going to move ahead and discuss more search engines who were born in the world of internet. We shared detailed information about the very first search engine named as Excite and the second one, Yahoo! which still positioned in the list of leading search engines. The next is WebCrawler…

WebCrawler – Originated in 1994

As stated by Phoenix SEO, it was the first search engines which were providing full-text search. It was created by Brian Pinkerton, a student of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington. With this search engine, Brian created a list of 25 websites running at the top position on March 25, 1994. After a month, Brian declared the launch of WebCrawler which comprised the data of around 4000 websites. During June 1994, Brian posted at the Usenet group, info system with a declaration depicting that the WebCrawler is now available for searching results. By November 1994, WebCrawler served one millionth search queries, and by the end of the year, WebCrawler collaborated with two sponsors – DealerNet and Starwave providing required funding in order to finance WebCrawler. And after some time, WebCrawler started operating on the revenue of advertising.

During September 1995, an aspect named as Spidey was created as the WebCrawler’s mascot. And after 2 years in 1997, WebCrawler was sold to Excite by AOL. Initially, it was decided to that WebCrawler will we manage by the dedicated team, but eventually both of them merged and worked on the same backend. In 2001, Excite was bankrupt and bought by Infospace, which technically means WebCrawler also became the entity of InfoSpace. Today, InfoSpace is working on WebCrawler as a meta search tool giving combined results from Google, Yahoo!, Live Search (MSN Search), Ask, About.com, and others.

Lycos – Originated in 1994

Developed in 1994, Lycos was one of the earliest search engines. It was created by the Dr. Michael Mauldin along with a team of researchers, students of Carnegie Mellon University. Its name is derived from the Latin term “Lycosidea” which is related to the wolf spiders that actively stalk their prey. Founded with the capital of $2 million provided by CMGI, that time the company was headed by Bob Davis. Bob Davis focused on making the Lycos an advertising supported web portal. The next year, the company changed their status as public running on little money. Due to its phenomenal growth, Lycos acquired the largest index by the end of 1996 with approximately 60 million documents. During the year 1997, Lycos Pro was released comprising a new search algorithm and it was still growing. By the year 1999, Lycos emerged as the most visited web portal over the internet. For the few next year, Lycos became one of the most profitable business and also obtained two dozen internet brands.

By the year 1999, Lycos became the most visited search portal and continued to add the new projects to its arsenal. During the February month, Lycos turned into USA/Lycos Interactive Networks and that time company acquired $18 billion. Afterwards, Lycos announced project commanding to create a search query tool to provide query information on USATODAY.com the news site. Later in September 1999, Lycos obtained Quote.com worked as an investment information site and finally in December 1999, the company invested in FAST search technology which was powering the advanced search technology of Lycos.

Since the year 2006, Lycos declared the launch of some aspects including Lycos Phone, Lycos Mall, and Lycos MIX. Later, these tools were combined with IM video chat, mp3 player, social media applications, video watch, receiving via email, and sending unlimited file size, which made Lycos remains as the top 25 internet endpoint erect behind Yahoo!, AOL, MSN and MySpace as described by Orlando SEO Services.
